Why MCP makes context engineering a platform decision.
Enterprise AI teams have spent the last year arguing about prompts, models, and agent frameworks. That combination matters. Once major platform vendors start talking about context access as infrastructure, enterprise teams should stop treating context as a prompt appendix. It becomes part of the operating model: what the model can see, what it can do, what it should remember, how it escalates, and how the business inspects the result.
The real bottleneck is not raw model intelligence.
Most enterprise AI failures do not begin with a weak model. They begin with messy context. The model gets too much irrelevant information, too little task-specific structure, poorly named tools, unsafe write permissions, or an unclear workflow boundary. When that happens, better prompting only masks the problem for a little while.
OpenAI's MCP guidance says the quiet part out loud: remote MCP servers can expose dozens of tools and verbose schemas, which drives up token cost, latency, and decision complexity. Anthropic has made a related point from the agent side: the most successful teams tend to win with simple, composable patterns rather than sprawling autonomous systems. Put those together and the lesson is obvious. Context engineering is less about clever phrasing and more about disciplined system design.
What context engineering actually owns.
Context engineering is the design of the model's working world. That includes instructions, memory, retrieved content, tool definitions, output schemas, workflow state, and the rules that decide which of those pieces are present for a given task. In an enterprise setting, four layers usually determine whether the system survives contact with reality:
Tool surface: which systems the model can read from, write to, or call into.
Context budget: which instructions, records, schemas, and results deserve scarce tokens.
Workflow boundary: where the model can improvise and where the business requires deterministic control.
Review and evidence: which actions need human approval, logging, traceability, and replay.
This is why MCP matters even if you never standardize on one protocol everywhere. It forces a healthier design conversation: which capabilities are portable, which should stay behind a gateway, how much tool metadata belongs in the live context, and how much orchestration should be deterministic before the model ever gets a turn.
Workflows first, agents second.
Anthropic's engineering guidance distinguishes workflows from agents for a reason. Workflows are systems where the path is largely prescribed, even if a model performs individual steps. Agents take on more open-ended planning and tool use. That is not just an academic distinction. It is the difference between a governed operating process and a demo that feels smart until it touches production variance.
In practice, most enterprise value shows up sooner in workflow systems: claims review, service operations, compliance evidence assembly, AI contact center support, engineering copilots, and modernization tasks that require models to gather context, perform bounded actions, and hand off cleanly to people. Those are exactly the environments where tool contracts, context budgets, and audit trails matter more than generalized autonomy.
Why this lands on the platform team.
Once context access becomes shared infrastructure, someone has to own the surface area. Security teams care about permissions. Architecture teams care about integration sprawl. Operations teams care about latency and failure handling. Product teams care about the user-visible handoff. Compliance teams care about evidence and replay. No single prompt engineer can carry all of that.
The platform implication is straightforward: enterprise AI needs a control plane for context. Whether you implement that through MCP, internal tool gateways, policy services, or a hybrid stack, the job is the same. Make context access legible, limitable, observable, and reviewable before the business starts depending on it.
What enterprise teams should do now.
Start with one workflow, not an abstract agent mandate. Define the task, systems, failure modes, and approval points first.
Treat tool design as product design for the model. Tight names, narrow schemas, and clear boundaries outperform huge generic tool catalogs.
Engineer context intentionally. Most production failures come from stale, bloated, or ambiguous context rather than raw model capability.
Separate read actions from write actions. Give models safe inspection paths before operational authority.
Measure the operating layer. Latency, handoff quality, tool success rate, escalation rate, and audit completeness matter more than demo eloquence.
